What Are Immediate Dentures?

Immediate dentures are temporary, full-arch prosthetics placed right after your teeth are extracted. Designed in advance, they allow you to leave the office with a complete, natural-looking smile—even during the healing phase.

These dentures help:

  • Preserve your facial appearance
  • Maintain your ability to speak and chew
  • Avoid the emotional discomfort of being toothless in public

How the Process Works

  • Pre-Extraction Impressions – We take detailed impressions and measurements of your existing teeth and gums before your extractions to design a denture that closely resembles your natural teeth.
  • Custom Fabrication – Your immediate denture is created to match your mouth’s shape, color, and smile line—ready for same-day insertion after your extraction appointment.
  • Tooth Removal & Same-Day Insertion – Dr. Ali Obeidi performs the extractions and places your denture in one visit, allowing you to leave with your new smile in place.

Important Considerations

Because your mouth begins to heal and change shape immediately after extractions, there are a few important things to know about immediate dentures:

  • We can’t fully verify the fit until your teeth are removed, so some esthetic or structural compromises may be necessary

  • Your gums and jawbone will shrink and change during the healing phase

  • You’ll need periodic adjustments with temporary liners or tissue conditioners to maintain comfort and fit

Once healing is complete (typically 3–6 months), a permanent reline or new denture will be needed

 What’s Included & What’s Not

Your immediate denture treatment typically includes:

  • Pre-extraction impressions
  • Same-day denture placement
  • Initial adjustments after healing begins

Not included (may have separate fees):

  • Temporary liners or tissue conditioners
  • Future relines
  • Transition to permanent dentures or implant-supported options

FAQ

1. How long do immediate dentures last?

Immediate dentures are designed as a temporary solution used during the healing phase after extractions. Because the gums and bone shrink rapidly over the first few months, most patients need a permanent denture or implant-supported option after 3–6 months. Some patients wear immediate dentures longer with relines, but they are not intended as a long-term solution.

2. Will my immediate dentures fit comfortably after surgery?

Your immediate dentures will fit well initially, but as your gums and bone heal, the fit will naturally loosen. This is completely normal. You’ll need periodic adjustments, soft liners, or tissue conditioners to maintain comfort. Dr. Obeidi will monitor your healing and make sure your dentures stay functional throughout the process.

3. Can I eat normally with immediate dentures?

You’ll start with a soft food diet immediately after surgery—soups, pasta, eggs, yogurt, mashed foods, etc. As healing progresses, you can gradually introduce more solid foods. Because swelling and gum changes occur, chewing may require extra time and patience. Once your permanent denture or implant-supported restoration is placed, chewing becomes much easier.

4. Are immediate dentures painful?

Most patients experience mild soreness from the extractions, not the dentures themselves. In fact, immediate dentures can act like a protective bandage over the surgical sites. Any discomfort typically improves within a few days. Dr. Obeidi provides detailed aftercare instructions and medication as needed to keep you comfortable.

5. What’s the difference between immediate dentures and permanent dentures?

Immediate dentures:

  • Placed the same day as extractions

  • Designed for the healing phase

  • Require adjustments and temporary liners

  • Not as precise due to swelling and anatomical changes

Permanent dentures:

  • Created after healing—much more accurate fit

  • Offer better comfort, stability, and esthetics

  • Can be traditional or implant-supported
Many patients use immediate dentures as a transition to a more stable, long-term permanent or implant-supported option.

6. Can I upgrade from immediate dentures to implant-supported dentures later?

Yes. Many patients choose immediate dentures as a temporary first step before upgrading to implant-supported dentures, snap-on dentures, or full arch implants. Once your bone and gums fully heal, Dr. Obeidi can evaluate implant candidacy and help plan a long-term solution with increased stability and chewing power.

7. How much do immediate dentures cost in Houston, TX?

Pricing varies depending on:

  • Whether you need full or partial extractions

  • The materials used

  • Number of follow-up adjustments

  • Your long-term restoration plan (permanent denture vs implants)

At Elite Dental Specialists, we provide transparent, upfront pricing, accept most PPO insurance plans, and offer multiple financing options to keep treatment affordable. A personalized estimate is provided during your consultation.
