What Happens During Implant Placement?
The surgical procedure to place a dental implant typically takes 30 to 60 minutes for one implant, and 2 to 3 hours for multiple implants, depending on your treatment plan. Every case is unique, and we take the time to carefully plan and execute every detail for your success.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Pre-Surgery Prep
Before surgery, you may receive antibioticsand your choice of IV sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas)for comfort. Local anesthesia is always administered to numb the area. - Precise Surgical Placement
Dr. Obeidi makes a small incision in the gum to access the bone. Using 3D-guided surgical techniques, the titanium implant is gently placed into the jawbone. Depending on your case, the implant may be visible above the gums or covered beneath them during healing.
Post-Surgical Healing
Healing time varies depending on the quality and density of your bone, but it typically ranges from 3 to 6 months. In many cases, temporary teethcan be placed the same day as surgery (Teeth-in-a-Day) to maintain aesthetics and comfort during healing.
Healing and Recovery
The implant needs time to fuse with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration, forming a strong foundation for your new teeth. You may return for follow-up visits where:
- A healing capor abutmentis placed to guide the gum’s shape
- Impressions are taken to begin fabricating your permanent restoration
- Your progress is monitored to ensure ideal integration and soft tissue health
In some cases, we may recommend a soft tissue graftto enhance gum appearance and improve cleaning access around the implant.
When Are Implants Placed After Tooth Extraction?
Timing depends on your oral health and the condition of the extraction site:
- Immediate Implant Placement– Done the same day as the extraction when bone quality is ideal and no infection is present
- Delayed Placement– If there’s bone loss or infection, we may wait several months before placing the implant
Bone Grafting First– If the bone has shrunk or deteriorated, grafting may be needed to rebuild proper support for the implant
What Comes Next After Implant Placement?
Once healing is complete, we begin the restorative phase, which includes:
- Impressions of your mouth and bite
- Design and placement of abutments
- Fabrication of your custom crowns, bridges, or full-arch prosthetics
- Final fitting of your new smile
